Ecological Hotel, Responsible Tourism & Accessibility.

Our goal is to help both the planet and our guests get healthier and happier. So right from the beginning of the business, 20 years ago, our aim was to build a centre that was as sustainable as possible while still enabling our guests to have a healthy happy comfortable stay. Many guests are surprised to hear we are completely off-grid and have no connection to the municipal systems for electricity, water and sewage. We think about all of our water and power usage and what waste we are producing. We think about each watt that is used, so all electric items use the least watts possible. We research every product, and try to buy the ones that use the least power, but still function well. Our small boutique hotel runs on approximately 4kw on summer days and this drops to about 700w at night even when full with guests. In 2024, 92% of our electricity came from our PV electric solar panels. By using the larger electric items at different times of the day we can make full use of the sun. We use eco AC, as in we run our AC via the PV electric solar panels, to keep the bedrooms comfortable (25°C indoor temp even in last Summers heat waves). Guests are amazed how cool it is inside during the Summer, as the main building has 60cm thick stone walls. There are shutters fitted to the windows in the main building, so we can prevent the sun warming up the rooms. 

The garden suites have been built with the sun’s angle in mind. In the Summer the windows are shaded from the sun and in Winter the sun shines in to heat up the rooms. During Summer nights we use eco ventilation, where the night air is used to cool the buildings down, while using very little power. 
We have a solar pool cover which heats the water in Spring, Autumn & Winter and minimises evaporation. This means our pool is swimmable from March through to November all via the sun’s power. Our light bulbs are low energy. Our hair dryers use half the power of a standard drier. We do not have electric kettles, instead we provide thermoses of hot water for tea and coffee in the dining room, and kettles on the gas rings of the BBQs. 
We plan to keep buying PV panels and adding more eco AC units, as the possibility of heat waves rises, so that we are not burning fossil fuels to keep cool. We plan to buy an electric vehicle and more PV panels so we can do airport and train station transfers using the power of the sun.

Water is now such an important resource and we again reduce our usage as much as possible. We do not water the garden (we have planted drought resitant plants), we try not to fill the pool and we have a solar pool cover to prevent evaporation and we use rain to fill the pool. Unfortunately we now have a drier climate so the pool height may fluctuate, but we will make sure it is still good for swimming and for the filtration system. Please help us limit our water usage by not wasting water, with group laundry, only changing towels & sheets 2x a week and having shorter showers & turning the tap off when we clean our teeth. All of our waste water goes back into the ground onsite after processing. So we are a circular system.

All our trash & rubbish is recycled. We compost on site and the rest of our waste is separated into either plastic & metal, cardboard & paper, or glass. Separate rubbish/trash bins are located on every floor of the hotel and also under the sink in the garden suites and by the steps to the pool. We have a separate diaper/nappy bin by the steps up to the pool and the white bags in your room are for sanitary waste. In your rooms we give you a compostable bag, a white bag for sanitary waste and a special black recycled bag for plastic, metal & tetrapacks. Please separate your waste so we do not need to go through your waste to separate it. Thank you for your help.

We encourage travel by bike, public transport of electric vehicle. If you come by high speed train from outside of Spain we give you a 50 euros discount off your room for a one week B&B stay.

Accessibility

• Onsite 25 metre pool, small pool, infra-red far-red sauna, gym/yoga studio, are all accessible.
• Morning yoga by the pool or in the yoga studio each morning is available for all.
• You can relax and sit in the small pool, or we will help you into the large pool to swim & relax with noodles & floats. We have 2 bedrooms on the ground floor of the hotel with bathrooms with roll in showers and pull down seats. As well as a support on the right hand side of the toilet and lower sinks. Our garden suites also have walk in showers but there is one step up to enter each of the garden suites. Please call us or we can telephone you to discuss your requirements.
• In the Summer there are floating chairs and life guards by the lake in Banyoles & Tamariu on the beach for people with disabilities to enter & enjoy the water.
