Lake Banyoles open water swim
Just a few minutes from our hotel, stunning Lake Banyoles is renowned for its pristine, groundwater-fed waters and ideal open water training conditions. Whether you are preparing for a triathlon, looking to improve your open water skills or just want to enjoy the scenery, the lake provides the perfect setting. We welcome swimmers of all abilities, from those taking their first open water strokes to experienced athletes looking to refine their technique or endurance.
Triathletes and open water swimmers should bring their federation licence to be able to swim the 1000m (500m each way) all year round. It costs €3 p/p/day. Wetsuits are needed from November to May, depending on the individual. It is coldest at the end of January, at around 12°C.
The lake is open to all swimmers from mid-June to mid-September in protected areas with lifeguards. There is a free area at the north-eastern end of the lake called Caseta de Fusta, or you can swim from the Club Natacio de Banyoles, which also has 2 x 25m pools and other sports facilities and a snack bar in summer.
21 September 2025. The 2.2 km Traversia. Swim the length of Lake Banyoles. Over 1000 participants. Both world champions and novices swim ‘together’, most of them miles ahead of me! Set new goals with our guidance and the natural training ground of Lake Banyoles. Let us know how we can support your goals for 2025 and beyond!
Along the coast of the Costa Brava, there are also the Via Bravas, yellow buoyed swimming routes of 1-2 km in length. I really like the one from Tamariu to the bay in the north. Many of the Costa Brava’s beaches have sheltered areas where you can swim in summer, and most beaches have Blue Flag status, with clear water and an amazing array of marine life to discover. There are also a number of swimming competitions in the Mediterranean throughout the year, such as the 7km swim from L’Estartit to the Iles de Medes and back.
There are also local rivers with pools for wild swimming. Just ask us for directions.
